How to Look at Things

When a space loses its function, you have to grab the moment with both hands.

SUN 26 APRIL, 16:00 - SPHINX - 50’

Dear Advisor
Vincent Meessen, BE, 2008, BetaSP, 8’

Dear Adviser shows a man in a tailored suit with a hat, wandering through the desolate centre of Chandigarh - India, designed by Le Corbusier. The ordinary little man goes on a pilgrimage to the ruins of the modernistic age. The buildings renew their purpose and offer the man an excuse to escape from the everlasting ‘now’.

De Tijd
Bart Vegter, NL, 2008, 35mm, 9'

A computer simulation displays slowly evolving geometrical figures. In a play of light and colour the figures symbolize purity and abstraction.

Atlantis
Pieter Geenen, BE, 2008, miniDV, 11’

Pieter Geenen travelled to the controversial Three Gorges Dam in China and filmed the submerged society. While the searchlights of a cruise ship register the remnants of a flourishing industry, a rich cultural history and a beautiful scenery, the artist takes us to an underwater world that has become the silent witness of what once was a bustling community.

Manifest Destiny
Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukacs, NL, 2009, HDCAM, 17’

A scientist talks about his lifelong search for alien life. Hi-res images take us on a trip throughout outdated ideas about the surface of the moon and Mars. The film looks into the way mankind gives a very imaginaire interpretation to its urge to discover and conquer.

And the Sun flowers
Mary Helena Clark, US, 2008, DigiBeta, 5’

Antique wallpaper from Baltimore seems to lead a life of its own. While the viewer tries to find out the meaning of the Rorschach-like figures, the filmmaker makes sure that the viewer is never entirely able to focus on the images. The tape with relaxation instructions implicates that not the finding, but the viewing is important.
