Darwin Knows Best

The Origin of Species was published 150 years ago. In ‘Darwin knows best’, three filmmakers reinterpret the theory of evolution in their own way.

Origin of the Species
Ben Rivers, UK, 2008, 16mm, 16’

A 70-year old man lives in a remote part of Scotland. His obsession with Darwin and the urge to completely understand his theory result in an isolated existence in the woods.

#37

Joost Rekveld, NL, 2009, 35mm, 29’

Many pre-modern theories consider crystals as an intermediate form between the mineral, vegetative and animal kingdoms. Rekveld worked on this project for 8 years and developed software that simulates the growth of crystals. This resulted in a hallucinatory trip through an unbelievable palette of colours, enchanting mandalas and abstract shapes.

Evolutions

Jani Ruscica, FI, 2008, DigiBeta, 18’

Adolescents talk about their world vision, experiences and history in a studio, free from time and space. Their story mixes with scientific, religious and mythical explanations for the start of the universe.
